Donald Judd's foray into furniture design and architecture comes as no surprise. His father and grandfather were master carpenters and his tenets on functionality fostered an intimate relationship with material form and longevity. The structure and lines in Judd's furniture designs are reminiscent of his art. Slants, stacks, and recesses call upon the breadth at which Judd approached minimalism.

Chair 84 in particular was born out of Judd's children's need to sit at their desks to complete homework. The multiple variations of the chair reflect both the form and function of its main purpose—sitting.
