Sherrie Levine American, b. 1947

Sherrie Levine (b. 1947, Hazleton, Pennsylvania) is a pioneering American artist recognized for her pivotal role in the appropriation art movement. After earning her MFA from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1973, Levine became prominent in the late 1970s and 1980s for rephotographing works by earlier artists, most notably her series “After Walker Evans” in 1981, which sparked significant debate about originality and authorship in art.

Levine’s work continues to challenge established ideas of creativity, authenticity, and identity by recontextualizing iconic images from art history and mass culture. As a member of the Pictures Generation, she has exhibited internationally and remains a central figure in discussions about the meaning and ethics of image reproduction in the contemporary era
