In these works, Leal draws a map of the furrows on the surface of the canvas (by hand with a pencil, without a ruler), assuming it as a terrain to be mapped. Here he used the cartographic scale 1:1, that is, a map that has the same size as the territory, as in Borges' story “On Rigor in Science.”
The notion of 'Grammatical' is a reference to the ability of language to build the world; the world is the language one uses to designate and define it. Language is equated to reality – here it is, the reality of the canvas, equating what happens on the surface and on the hyper-surface. There are no ethics without aesthetics and no world without language, as demonstrated by Ludwig Wittgenstein, a very important philosophical reference in the work of Ernesto Leal.
