SWIPE: Lizzie Gill

3 October - 16 November 2019

In the exhibition SWIPE, Lizzie Gill explores how the modern approach to romance has evolved along with technology into the form of online courship. Utilizing images of a bygone era, she finds inspiration by engaging with these images through a "post-feminist" contemporary societal lens. Highlighting 1950's American romantic imagery, the artist ironically dissects dating codes of the past and present, revealing forgotten social layers in the swiping era. These simple compositions feature, as the titles suggest, fragments of interactions, that, like a bad date - we may prefer to forget entirely. Underscoring the Echom Boomer quandry of being caught between the past and present. As the last generation to remember the 20th century and a time before the fully digital age.
