Mira Schendel

Mira Schendel was a Brazilian contemporary artist of the 20th century. Considered one of the most significant artists to emerge from Latin America during the twentieth century, she made numerous drawings on rice paper, but was also active as a painter, a poet, and a sculptor. Born in Switzerland in 1919, Schendel emigrated to Brazil from Europe in 1949, ultimately settling in São Paulo in 1953, where she swiftly occupied a leading place in the country’s vibrant post-war artistic scene.

Recent solo exhibitions include Mira Schendel at Hauser & Wirth, as well as Tate Modern’s full-scale survey of Schendel’s work which travelled from London to the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo and The Fundação de Serralves, Museu de Arte Contemporânea, Porto in 2014. Schendel’s work was also featured in the 20th São Paolo Biennial and the 12th Documenta, Kassel. Schendel’s works are included in museums such as the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and the MoMA, New York.
